Well featured phone with better than expected battery life

Well featured phone with better than expected battery life
I bought this for a family member who was upgrading from a windows phone and wanted an affordable model but a larger screen with front and rear cameras. This latest model from Sony has beefed up the specs in a few areas aside from the larger IPS display this also has a quad core processor and most of the basics you'll require in a phone including an LED light that can be used as a torchlight or for flash photos. In most ways it's a sound offering, though the market is quite crowded at this price level. The E4 does well for day to day use, though it has a few places where it could be a bit better. I've spent about a week testing this handset and rounded up a quick fire list of the points that stood out to me during use.Good points:+ Fairly speedy performance the quad core 1.3 GHz Cortex-A7 does well for multi tasking the phone feels snappy in use and does a decent job with most games (Mali-400MP2 for graphics) little to fault here+ Larger 5” IPS panel has quite good viewing angles the display is very much in the “decent” category though a few rivals do better with sharper displays, multi touch display is responsive and with good accuracy+ Good call quality, microphone and speaker are above average decent sound for hands free calling build in speaker is quite loud and has the clarity to match+ Has most of the features you want, Bluetooth v4.1, A2DP, apt-X (newest versions) GPS, FM radio with RDS+ Front and rear cameras (rear 5mp autofocus 1080p HD video) front 2mp and 720p video LED flash is also present+ Excellent battery life Sony make big claims here that it can last 2 days during normal use and it can, but watch the battery hog apps, heavy video/gaming will hit the battery but for most users they will be able to get 2 days out of it or close to that, Sony's stamina settings are quite effective too+ Build is good comfortable to hold plastics are of a nice tactile quality no obvious creaking or poor fitting panels+ Supports micro SD cards up to 32GBWeaker areas:- Comes preloaded with quite a lot of Sony's own “apps” possibly a bit too much for my liking (some are useful aka Walkman, some less so -Xperia Lounge a strong candidate for bloat-ware) you can of course adjust the phone to your taste- Not the highest pixel density it's about 220 ppi, not quite as contrasty or vivid as some displays struggles a bit in harsh lighting (screen is quite reflective)- This model isn't 4G capable (there is a specific one for 4G), no NFC though not unexpected for a budget handset- Camera is nothing special a little better than some rivals in this class fine for social media or small prints not much else (quite heavy processing on images)- Rear speaker easily covered (not the best location at the bottom of the case at the back)Notes:Sim card size is “micro sim”Runs Android 4.4.4 out of the box update is expected to 5.1 lollipop shortlyThe phone has 1GB of ram (seems to be quite good enough for most tasks)Out of the 8GB storage just under 5GB is available for use, most user installed apps can be moved to the micro SD card thoughLike a lot of modern handsets there is no easy access to the battery (sealed in)In the box you get a micro USB lead for charging and a “screen protector” peel this off and fit it, though Sony state the glass is “scratch resistant” it doesn't have any branding (ie Goriilla glass) so far it seems fine without the protectorThe Xperia E4 is quite a nice handset for those who want a phone that's reasonably well priced, and speedy enough to cope with playing a few games, multi tasking with apps open. Stand out areas include the sound which has good depth to it (for a handset speaker) and the battery does live up to claims, don't expect to watch streaming video for 2 days solid likewise heavy game players will probably need a daily charge. But for most normal uses (ie mixed use) it's capable of hitting the 2 day mark quite consistently. The display is good, an IPS panel this looks better in person than the spec sheet might indicate, most users should be fairly happy with it though if you put it next to higher density displays (Moto G2 for example) it doesn't quite have the sharpness or depth of colour. One area I did note was in hard lighting it tends to wash out a bit more than some screens.Camera falls firmly into the “not bad” level it does have autofocus, you have a range of “intelligent” modes as well as manual controls and some funky art effects/panoramic mode, the LED flash is also of some use for taking pictures in a dark environment (at close range) You can't really fault it much here only the more expensive handsets have good cameras but they are at least fitting front ones now so if you use Viber or Skype it's a welcome addition.Right now the E4 is quite a good price and it's going to fall over time making the phone even more attractive. I'd prefer if Sony were a little less enthusiastic about loading the phone up with tons of their “apps” most of them I wouldn't find very useful, for a more streamlined experience Motorola might be worth a look. Which brings me to the rivals Moto E2 a 4.5” smaller display but higher density and a better graphics chip, battery is good on both handsets and the Sony has a bit of an edge on the camera, but the newer G is available for a little more making choices here quite tricky. Not quite enough to hit the 5/5 for me but It's still a very respectable handset if you are looking for a 5” display phone that won't break the bank and has a decent battery life.

I had the previous model to this, and after a couple of years of hard usage and being dropped, over-recharged and misused it finally gave up the ghost. I'd liked it so much that I wanted to replace it with the nearest model I could, and this fits the bill. A good all-round smartphone.
Not only that, but it arrived the day after I ordered it, so I wasn't phoneless for long.
Only had it for three days, but currently it's living up to expectations and doing everything it's supposed to.

I can't believe that Smartphones have developed this much in 2 1/2 years since my last one. It's astonishing what you get for under £100. Don't expect a perfect sound system, or telephoto camera, but as a functional phone with 3G+ data connection you can't go wrong. It comes with Google Now, and all the usual Android apps, plus access to the Sony branded app store. The recharging cable is pretty short, but detachable from the plug. There is a screen protector, which I suggest you put on in a clean room. (I got a couple of dust specks under mine which caused annoying bubbles under the plastic.) It's roughly the same size as a Samsung Galaxy S4, and to be quite honest, there's not a great deal to point out as different between them for the average user. You will need to use a data card if you intend to use this for music, photos and videos, since the video data rate is high and it fills up the 2GB of available space pretty fast. The battery life is enough to survive 1 1/2 to 2 days of normal use for me.

Update: I inserted an SD card in the slot where SD cards are meant to be inserted not expecting that this mundane task would lead to me spending an afternoon retrieving it from (fully) inside the phone. It was rattling around in the centre of the unit.
2* deducted for being a shabby effin' waste of time.

Original review: It's a good handheld mobile smartphone device.

Absolutely rubbish !
I had a Sony E4 before this, that broke down,I was stupid enough to buy another one.
This smart(?)phone is a troll, making my life a nightmare. The android system is unstable - slow and it keeps freezing down from time to time. The camera is rubbish - it just can't focus properly onto anything. The alarm is absolutely unreliable ,even if I set up two alarms,it happens the phone is
never alarming ,it just resets and de-activates the alarm from itself. And the list is going on and on.I can't wait to get rid of this phone.
SHAME ON YOU SONY making such a rubbish thing like this !

Item arrived as advertised and was quick to set up & use. Comes with a lot of pre-loaded apps - only some of which can be deleted. After deleting those I could there were still quite a few I would delete if possible. Overall though a nice phone.

I can't seem to find contact seller so will have to write my problem here.

The phone arrived and seemingly runs smooth... I do however have an issue with battery charging, no longer how long I leave it, it only charges to 76% max and charges very slowly.

Perhaps this is a faulty battery? But you would expect a battery that fully charges. Please contact me seller and remedy to this I will edit this to 5 stars.

Many thanks
Jamie
